HOSPITALITY 1: The Title Is Constantly Changing

2008

This cycle of creation brings together artists to explore the theme of “hospitality”. For the first instalment, we chose to play music. In light of the theme, we felt it was an honest and convivial way in which to begin our work together. We are not professional musicians, but we all have some musical ability and attack our own compositions in a manner that is both endearing and precise. We focus on the act of playing live music as a choreographic activity that has the potential to make the spectator feel both comfortable and disconcerted.

The line-up consists of drums, a guitar, a melodica, a xylophone, our voices (and who knows what else) while the game consists of playing music while searching for other activities we can perform simultaneously, and other ways of welcoming and addressing the spectator.

For the exercise, we give ourselves the following rules: a) Try to make it sound like music, preferably like a pop song, b) Put yourself in as awkward relationship to your instrument and to the other performers as possible, c) Maintain a constant relationship with the audience.

PME-ART’s HOSPITALITY cycle is a series of performances, installations, workshops, interventions, and conferences taking place in venues as varied as bars, theatres, art galleries, festivals and restaurants. While the precise nature of each edition (within the series) can vary wildly, all HOSPITALITY activities focus on questions and strategies surrounding how friends and strangers alike can interact in a manner that is concurrently useful, critical, hospitable and surprising.
